Nowhere to Stand, 260 × 150 mm, Stoneware clay, hand-built ceramic, 2026
This work is based on my mother’s experience of moving to Beijing for work, reflecting the perspective of an ordinary individual navigating life in a large and unfamiliar city.
The piece incorporates Chinese text drawn from her memories, forming a fragmented narrative shaped by recollection rather than a linear story. A recurring phrase—“Beijing is so big”—runs throughout the work. This phrase captures not only her personal experience at that time, but also a broader emotional condition: the feeling of being small within an overwhelming world.
Although rooted in a specific past, the work extends to the present. The sense of disorientation, distance from home, and uncertainty about the future continues to resonate. The scale of the city becomes a metaphor for a wider condition—of not knowing where one belongs, or where one is heading.
